I like them. I like to wander about, slowly. I prefer to travel by ferry or foot. A bus will do. A train, in a pinch. I like to travel in ways that I find myself in conversations.
I spent several summers traveling the routes of the northern most ferries: Alaska, Atlantic Canada, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Scandinavia, Scotland. I haven’t managed Greenland or Svalbard, but I always have my eyes up there. Here are a few stories and images of those times:
- Alaska — Kaasan
- Alaska — Aleutians
- Faroe Islands — Faroese
- Some of my photos from the Faroes are on The Island Review
I am always meaning to write more about my times in these places. The people I meet and the worlds I see, the histories of place and people and language and nature, I care so much about this, but time is ever short, it seems, and editing is ever long.
